Lord Brahma

Lord Brahma

God has been given the name of Brahman in Hindu religion. According to the Puranas, this same Brahman manifests itself in different forms and becomes many from one for the three important tasks of the evolution of the universe i.e. creation, maintenance and destruction. Lord Brahma does the work of creation, Vishnu does the work of maintaining the world and Mahesh i.e. Lord Shiva does the destruction of the world respectively. Here there is a lot of difference between Brahma and Brahman. Here we are discussing the creator Brahma. One of His names is also Hiranyagarbha because the entire universe originates from Him.

Story of Brahma's Origin

It is clear from the Hindu scriptures that Lord Brahma was born from the navel of Shri Hari Vishnu, hence He is also considered the son of Lord Vishnu. According to the story of Lord Brahma, when Shri Narayana was immersed in Yoganidra, a divine lotus appeared from His navel. Swayambhu Brahma appeared from this divine lotus. Then Brahma Ji doubted from whom and why He appeared out of this vast void. He started wondering that, "Who am I, sitting on this lotus flower?"

To know the source of His origin Brahma Ji did severe penance. As a result of long penance, Lord Vishnu appeared to Him in meditation and inspired Lord Brahma for creation. According to Matsya Purana, Lord Brahma has four faces from which the four Vedas are believed to have originated. Similarly, He has Veda, Kamandalu, Akshar Sutra and Varada Mudra in His four hands respectively. The main work of Lord Brahma is Creation.

It is Lord Brahma who creates all types of living beings, both movable and immovable, through Prajapatis. In all the Puranas, Lord Brahma is considered the father of the world. Brahma Ji is also called Pitamah by all deities and demons.

Lord Brahma's Family

According to Hindu scriptures, Savitri is the wife of Brahma and Goddess Saraswati is His daughter. The mount of Lord Brahma is Swan. Goddess Saraswati was manifested from the mouth of Lord Brahma. Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Sanatkumara are the four sons of Lord Brahma, who are collectively famous in all the worlds as Sanakadi Rishis.

After the appearance of the Sanakadi sages, Lord Brahma had manifested ten other Manasputras from His ten limbs, which included Atri from the eyes, Angiras from the mouth, Pulastya from the ears, Marichi from the Mind, Pulah from the navel, Kratu from the hand, Bhrigu from the skin, Vasistha from the Prana i.e. consciousness, Daksha from thumb, and Narada from His lap. The son of this Marichi Rishi was Maharishi Kashyap from whom various communities of living beings were born. To create the Maithuni Shrishti, Lord Brahma divided himself into two parts and created Manu and Shatarupa, from whom the entire human race originated.

The idol worship of Lord Brahma has been described in detail in Matsya Purana. Generally, people don't worship Lord Brahma, but deities and demons often worship Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma granted Ravana, Hiranyakashipu and Tripurasura the boon of being Avadhya i.e. non-killable by anyone.
